The locomotive 219.001-5 derives from the prototype V 169 001, developed as an evolution of the V160 and designed to tackle mountain lines thanks to the innovative auxiliary gas turbine system, used to provide additional power during departures with heavy trains and on steep gradients. This prototype contributed to the development of the subsequent DB locomotives of the 210 and 218 series.
