The launch took place on 30 May 1911 at the Harland and Wolff shipyard. Hailed as a marvel of marine engineering, the Titanic was considered unsinkable. This legend proved false on its maiden voyage, when the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank along with approximately 1,500 people on the night of April 14-15, 1912. It was one of the most spectacular maritime disasters of the 20th century.
