The M48 Patton; an American first generation main battle tank (MBT), part of the M46-M60 family of vehicles that were the main battle tanks of the US Army during the Korean and Vietnam War. In 1951, the M-47 tanks were replaced with a modern design, but a multitude of technical problems prevented the rapid implementation of the project. Finally, in 1953, the first version of the new M-48 was in service, which it replaced; the reliable but obsolete M-47.
