The torpedo, modified to allow it to be guided while submerged by two operators equipped with breathing apparatus, was intended to carry a high-explosive warhead under the keel of the moored ship. The torpedoes had a limited speed and were equipped with a guidance system. The batteries that powered the electric motor guaranteed a range of 12-15 miles. The most famous exploit of the Royal Navy's raiders occurred on December 19, 1941. Transported by the submarine "Scirè", the SLCs sank the British Royal Navy battleships HMS Valiant and HMS Queen Elizabeth in the port of Alexandria, Egypt.
