SLC Maiale with crew Description: PHOTO-ETCHED - 2 NEW FIGURES - COLOR INSTRUCTION SHEET MINES NOT INCLUDED Based on the experiences and successes of the Italian Royal Navy in the First World War, in 1935 Teseo Tesei and Elios Toschi designed and progressively perfected the Siluro a Lenta Corsa (SLC) which would become better known as the “Maiale”. The torpedo, modified to allow it to be guided while submerged by two operators equipped with breathing apparatus, was intended to carry a high-explosive warhead under the keel of the moored ship. The torpedoes had a limited speed and were equipped with a guidance system. The batteries that powered the electric motor guaranteed a range of 12-15 miles. The most famous exploit of the Royal Navy's raiders occurred on December 19, 1941. Transported by the submarine "Scirè", the SLCs sank the British Royal Navy battleships HMS Valiant and HMS Queen Elizabeth in the port of Alexandria, Egypt. The MAS 500s, equipped with the new, more powerful and reliable Isotta-Fraschini gasoline engines, developed during World War II, were used both as torpedo boats and as anti-submarine platforms for launching depth charges.
