American destroyer USS Forrest Sherman DDG-98 - Trumpeter 04528

USS Forrest Sherman (DDG-98) is a modern American guided missile destroyer, keel laid in 2003, launched in October 2004, and commissioned by the US Navy in 2006. The overall length of the ship is 155, 3 meters and a width of 20 meters. The total displacement reaches 9,200 tons and the maximum speed exceeds 30 knots. The destroyer is armed with: 2 VLS Mk. 41 – one 32-rail and one 64-rail, single 127mm gun, two triple torpedo tubes or one 20mm Vulcan Phalanx CIWS set. The vessel can operate with two onboard helicopters, for example the Sikorsky MH-60R. USS Forrest Sherman (DDG-98) is one of 65 active duty destroyers of the Arleigh Burke class. Units of this type were designed, were and are being built as multi-purpose destroyers, in which, however, special emphasis was placed on countering aerial targets. British experience from the Falklands War was used in the construction of these ships, and as a result Kevlar armor was added to the more practicable parts of ships of this class. At the same time, the Arleigh Burke-class ships have the revolutionary AEGIS network combat system, which works together with the AN / SPY-1 radar, which gives them unprecedented possibilities to control the airspace and counter air targets. This is the same system used on Ticonderoga-class cruisers. One of the units of this class is the USS Forrest Sherman (DDG-98). The vessel was built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. It was built to the Flight IIA standard, which means that compared to the Flight I standard, it has larger VLS launchers, the barrel of the 127mm gun has been lengthened, due to which its ballistic properties are improved, and it has more modern equipment electronic. Additionally, subtype USS Momsen has only one Vulcan Phalanx kit as opposed to two such standard ship-fitted kits: Flight I, Flight II, and Initial Flight IIA. USS Forrest Sherman, shortly after commissioning, was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet and made her first operational cruise in this ocean, as well as the Mediterranean and Black Seas. In 2007, the unit held joint exercises with the fleet Ukraine. In the same year, the ship took part in joint maneuvers with Israeli and Turkish units. USS Forrest Sherman remains in active service.
